Anushka Valmiki, a fifth-grader, faces unique family circumstances with her sister's early marriage, a sibling with Down's syndrome, and another with a learning disability. Her father, a driver earning 15,000 rupees ($184 USD) a month, supports not only his immediate family but also his widowed sister and her two children. Her family kept her brother at the private school, because they chose that males in their family should pursue proper education.
